USW Springboard Programme

As we saw GDP plunge and the UK enter recession for the first time in eleven years earlier this year; it was recognised early on in the current pandemic that our soon-to-be graduate leavers would be entering an unpredictable jobs market – a jobs market that many of us had not seen the likes of before.

Supporting Class of 2020

‘With the size and speed of the economic shock from the Covid-19 crisis unprecedented in modern history’ (Employment Studies paper, April 2020, Wilson, Cockett et al) and continuing to reverberate around so many sectors, the USW Springboard Programme was conceived.

Acknowledging that significant numbers of USW graduates traditionally enter self-employment or go to work for SME’s given their discipline excellence in the creative industries, hospitality and live events; the USW Springboard Programme aims to help ease Class of 2020 graduates’ transition into the challenging labour market, raise aspirations and improve workplace and entrepreneurial skills training.

A package of support that benefited both our summer and winter graduates was seen as a clear priority by the University.

So, what is the USW Springboard Programme?

USW Springboard is an umbrella programme with a graduate internship scheme at its heart. The 2020-21 Programme provides 20, four-month salaried graduate internships hosted at the University, and provides interns (and others from Class of 2020) with access to enterprise and entrepreneurship activities and graduate employability-linked opportunities.

‘maximising graduate success’ is a key goal and ambition within the University’s USW 2030 strategic plan.

The Graduate Internship Scheme is run over two cohorts to allow both summer and winter Class of 2020 graduates to benefit, and successful applicants also benefit from over £10,000 worth of investment – inclusive of a comprehensive induction & welcome package, fully funded ILM Level 3 qualification, IT equipment loaned to reduce digital disadvantage and additional benefits including access to new networks and annual leave. At the time of writing, cohort one is well underway and applications for cohort two vacancies have recently opened.

The USW Springboard Programme sits alongside a variety of planned interventions for Class of 2020 and is a flagship element of the #USWNextSteps campaign that supports early years graduates, or graduates unsure of their next steps at the current time.

The campaign is curated on social media channels and brings together resources, opportunities and online engagements, lifelong learning opportunities, bespoke communications, and opportunities to update contact details.

This is indeed a light at the end of the tunnel, as a graduate during these interesting times.

Jia Wei Lee, Cohort One, Graduate Intern 2020-21

Delivered by a consortium of professional service offices across the University, the campaign has been running since May and aims to help our graduates make the best of their qualification and ensure that they remain connected to the exclusive benefits and services that will help them reach their chosen graduate destination in the months to come.

A note from Professor Julie Lydon

“You really area remarkable group of individuals. You have talent, you certainly have resilience, and you have the experience of studying whilst in a national lockdown and global pandemic. I know that will stand you in good stead as you go forward. Once again, congratulations Class of 2020 and do remember that you’re always part of the USW Family.”
